We Need a New Deal with the TPP

On June 14th, the U.S. and seven Asian and Latin American countries will meet in San Francisco to hammer out the first major trade deal under this new Administration. These meetings will provide an opportunity to fix the failures of the past, and lay out a new framework for the future.
During his campaign, President Obama outlined a bold vision for trade reform. He committed to a new model for American agreements that would put working people, the environment, family farms and consumers first.
But we cannot be too optimistic, as TPP negotiations present both possibility and peril.
If multi-national corporations get their way, a future TPP will include the worst copy-cat clap-trap cloned provisions from NAFTA and CAFTA. This pro-status-quo language will mirror much of the proposed — and still not passed — trade language from Bush negotiations with Colombia, Panama and Korea on trade agreements.
These failed attempts represent an ending point for the last administration, not a starting point for the new one.
We want to help President Obama craft new trade agreements that can last, rather than fighting against ones that look like the past.

We need to make clear we need a new deal, or there’s no deal, when it comes to the TPP.
Write to your elected representatives in Florida, and urge them to help support the President’s trade reform commitments. Ask them to demand a TPP that ditches the NAFTA model. Request that they use the TRADE Act as a roadmap to do it right this time.
The Trade Reform, Accountability, Development and Employment (TRADE) Act was introduced in Congress by Sen. Brown (OH) and Rep. Michaud (ME) with strong support from a wide variety of labor, environmental, family farm, faith, consumer and community groups. The TRADE Act is a fair trade legislation that sets new rules for our global economy that benefit workers and family farmers, strengthen our economy, and safeguard our environment, consumer safety, public health, and democratic rights. It is supported nationally by a wide range of progressive organizations including the AFL-CIO, Change to Win, Sierra Club, National Farmers Union, United Methodists, Public Citizen, United Steelworkers, Machinists, Teamsters, Communication Workers of America, UNITE HERE, Friends of the Earth, National Family Farm Coalition, Citizens Trade Campaign and many others.It currently has 143 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives – from both parties.
This landmark fair trade legislation will:
Fix Our Failed Trade Policies
Process for reviewing and renegotiating existing trade agreements like NAFTA, CAFTA and the WTO
Set a Platform for Fair Trade Policy
Mandatory criteria for future trade agreements regarding labor, environmental, food safety, intellectual property, service, procurement, investment, agricultural, national security, states’ rights, anti-dumping and dispute resolution provisions.
Ensure that Our Trade is Transparent, Accountable, and Democratic
Reassert Congressional authority and public oversight in trade policymaking.
