These emissions must be reduced in order to fully protect public health and the environment from the threats posed by global warming. If neglected, these emissions are likely to grow and could negate many of the hard-won carbon reductions achieved in other areas.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, the failure to internalize the cost of imports\u2019 embedded carbon emissions creates an unfair competitive advantage over similar products made within Oregon, increasing the likelihood that domestic manufacturing will move offshore or to other states.<br \/>\nThis foreseeable shift in manufacturing is likely to have negative economic impacts domestically, while increasing overall pollution levels globally.<\/p>\n<p>The Oregon Fair Trade Campaign is interested in finding ways to address the embedded emissions within imports in order to protect the environment, the economy and human rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>David Allaway, a waste reduction specialist in Oregon\u2019s Department of Environmental Quality, spoke about the \u201cEmbedded Emissions of Products\u201d during an Oregon Fair Trade Campaign panel on \u201cTrade and Global Warming\u201d during the 2009 Public Interest Environmental Law Conference.<br \/>\n<object id=\"VideoPlayback\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 326px;\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/video.google.com\/googleplayer.swf?docid=-5987412222120784988&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=true\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><embed id=\"VideoPlayback\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 326px;\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/video.google.com\/googleplayer.swf?docid=-5987412222120784988&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sierra Club\u2019s Trade and Climate Change Page<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/trade\/climate\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/trade\/climate\/<\/a><br \/>\n\u201c[A]s we embark on the path towards a green energy economy and the price of energy increases in the U.S., carbon intensive industry will again be tempted to relocate to countries with less stringent climate protection measures.
