{"id":252,"date":"2012-06-07T15:47:34","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T22:47:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/oregon\/?p=252"},"modified":"2013-06-20T05:00:50","modified_gmt":"2013-06-20T12:00:50","slug":"what-are-they-hiding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/oregon\/2012\/06\/07\/what-are-they-hiding\/","title":{"rendered":"What Are They Hiding?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/oregon\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_6171.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/oregon\/files\/2012\/03\/IMG_6171-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The United States hosted the 14th major round of behind-closed-door negotiations on the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/oregon\/orftc-campaigns\/the-trans-pacific-free-trade-agreement\/\">Trans-Pacific Free Trade Agreement<\/a> in Virginia this September.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having reportedly introduced text for some 29 different chapters, the U.S. Trade Representative has barred ordinary Americans from reviewing any of its proposals. \u00a0Even Senator Ron Wyden (D &#8211; Ore.) who <em>chairs the Senate Trade Subcommittee<\/em>\u00a0charged with reviewing trade policy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/05\/23\/trans-pacific-partnership-ron-wyden_n_1540984.html?ref=tw\">was initially refused access to TPP negotiating documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, approximately 600 corporate lobbyists have regular access to the negotiating texts as so-called &#8220;cleared advisors.&#8221; \u00a0This sort of back-room dealmaking only benefits the 1% and has to end. \u00a0In May, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/blog\/2012\/05\/08\/coalition-demands-transparency-in-trans-pacific-trade-negotiations\/\">ORFTC helped deliver over 42,000 petition signatures<\/a> urging that USTR inform the American public what its been proposing in our names. \u00a0That request has been flatly refused. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.avaaz.org\/en\/stop_the_corporate_death_star?dbsp760-m\">Over 700,000 have since signed this petition from Avaaz (which you can help push over the million signer mark by signing and sharing).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also time for elected officials to intervene.\u00a0<strong>TAKE ACTION NOW: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/org.salsalabs.com\/o\/1034\/p\/dia\/action\/public\/?action_KEY=10741\">Urge Congress to demand transparency in the TPP.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United States hosted the 14th major round of behind-closed-door negotiations on the new Trans-Pacific Free Trade Agreement in Virginia this September.
