About the National Days of Action on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2012, trade negotiators and corporate lobbyists from throughout the Pacific Rim will met in San Diego over the week of July 4th for a closed-doors trade summit aimed at rushing the secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) towards completion. \u00a0U.S. negotiators have granted approximately 600 corporate lobbyists access to the TPP texts, but have refused to tell the public what they are proposing in our names. \u00a0The Days of Action were designed to drag the TPP out of the shadows and help prevent a major corporate power grab.<\/p>\n

The Original Call to Action<\/em><\/strong><\/span>
\nWhile labor, environmental, consumer, immigrant rights, family farm and Occupy activists demonstrate in San Diego, you can help join in calling out the TPP’s back-room deal making by taking the following action:<\/div>\n
\n

Step 1:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Identify local branch one of the TPP’s “cleared corporate advisors.” \u00a0Popular choices include Wal-Mart, Chevron, Halliburton, FedEx, Verizon, Cargill and Caterpillar.<\/p>\n

Step 2:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Get a group of people together to visit that office or store at a specific date and time between Sunday, July 1 and Saturday, July 7. \u00a0It doesn’t matter if it’s just you and a friend; a contingent from your Central Labor Council; or an entire Occupy chapter. \u00a0The key to success is simply having people participate in as many different places as possible. \u00a0If you’d like to spread the word about your action, and potentially have others join you, please\u00a0post information about your visit here<\/a><\/span>\u00a0by Thursday, June 28 and we will list it on this website and circulate it via email.<\/p>\n

Step 3: \u00a0<\/strong>Make one or more signs that say the following: “USTR: NO BACK ROOM DEALS FOR THE 1%!” \u00a0Have your group take pictures with that sign during your visit (trying to capture the corporation in the background). \u00a0Email the best photos to\u00a0tppaction@citizenstrade.org<\/a>\u00a0by Saturday, July 7 and we’ll include them in a collage delivered to trade negotiators during a creative action in the final days of the San Diego negotiations.<\/p>\n

Step 4:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0When at your action, you can also choose\u00a0deliver this lette<\/span>r<\/a>;\u00a0hand out this flyer<\/a>\u00a0to passerby; use these\u00a0talking points<\/a>\u00a0to hold a rally;\u00a0draw connections between the TPP and local struggles; or do anything else that inspires you and your friends. \u00a0But please be sure to follow Step 3 to ensure that trade negotiators feel the heat from your action!<\/div>\n

Background: What is the TPP?<\/em><\/strong><\/span>
\nThe Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is poised to become the largest free trade agreement ever. \u00a0The massive trade and investment pact is currently being negotiated behind-closed-doors between the United States and countries throughout the Pacific Rim. \u00a0Current negotiating countries include the United States, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam, but the TPP is also intended as a “docking agreement” that all Pacific Rim nations will join over time. \u00a0Canada, Japan and Mexico are already pressing to do so. Powerful corporate interests are pushing for the TPP to:<\/p>\n
\n
    \n
  • Offshore good-paying jobs<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to low-wage nations and\u00a0undercut working conditions globally<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Create new tools for\u00a0attacking environmental and consumer safety standards<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Expand the\u00a0deregulation of banks, hedge funds and insurance companies<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Further concentrate global food supplies,\u00a0displacing family farmers and subjecting consumers to wild price fluctuations<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Institute longer patents that\u00a0restrict access to affordable, generic medications<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Impose IP restrictions that choke online speech, innovation, privacy and digital rights<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

    Instead of being debated out in the open, the TPP has thus far been negotiated in the shadows. \u00a0Approximately 600 corporate lobbyists have been given access to the TPP negotiating texts. \u00a0A handful of civil society groups also have access to the texts, but they are vastly outnumbered and are legally prevented from sharing what they’ve read. \u00a0Meanwhile, the people whose lives will be affected by the TPP have been barred from even reviewing what U.S. negotiators have proposed in our names.<\/p>\n

    The thirteenth major round of TPP negotiations \u2014 and perhaps one of the last \u2014 is taking place in San Diego from July 2 to 10. \u00a0There will be a variety of actions in San Diego at that time \u2014 but people of conscience throughout the country are needed to help ensure that the world isn’t saddled with another back-room trade deal that benefits the 1% at the expense of the global majority.<\/p>\n
