{"id":5076,"date":"2014-05-21T07:44:38","date_gmt":"2014-05-21T11:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/?p=5076"},"modified":"2015-03-15T15:16:34","modified_gmt":"2015-03-15T19:16:34","slug":"groups-warn-tafta-threatens-important-safeguards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/blog\/2014\/05\/21\/groups-warn-tafta-threatens-important-safeguards\/","title":{"rendered":"Groups Warn TAFTA Threatens Important Safeguards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A wide range of consumer, family farm, environmental, Internet freedom, labor and other organizations held a press event\u00a0outside the Trans-Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA) negotiating summit in Arlington, Virginia on\u00a0May 21, 2014 in order to expose the pact as more about deregulation than \u201ctrade\u201d per se.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorporations on both sides of the Atlantic view TAFTA as a means to prevent and dismantle safeguards that protect the quality air we breath, the water we drink and the food we feed our children \u2014 not to mention online privacy measures, financial reforms and more,\u201d said Gynnie Robnett, coordinator of the Coalition for Sensible Safeguards.\u00a0 \u201cWe can\u2019t let this pact become a back-door means of deregulation.\u201d The groups highlighted a number of consumer and environmental safeguards that corporations are targeting under TAFTA:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cEverywhere we look the <b>digital privacy rights<\/b> of global citizens are under siege. \u00a0TAFTA threatens to expand this threat by further entrenching the anti-consumer principles of a digital media environment of constant personal data collection and ubiquitous tracking,\u201d said Joy Spencer, associate director of the Center for Digital Democracy.<br \/>\n&#8211;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTAFTA could very well undermine the\u00a0<b>regulation of Wall Street banks<\/b>, insurance companies and hedge funds,\u201d said Ben Beachy, research director for Public Citizen\u2019s Global Trade Watch.\u00a0 \u201cWhile U.S. negotiators may oppose some European proposals, they still seem eager to include in TAFTA deregulatory pre-crisis rules that would conflict with our post-crisis efforts to keep banks from trading toxic derivatives or becoming \u2018too big to fail,\u2019 while empowering foreign banks to demand U.S. taxpayer compensation for the reregulation of finance.\u201d<br \/>\n&#8211;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cExpect more fracking and other <b>dirty energy<\/b> if TAFTA proceeds as corporations intend it to,\u201d said Jorge Aguilar, southern regional director of Food &amp; Water Watch.\u00a0 \u201cCountries should be coordinating on how to combat global warming and transition to sustainable energy economies, but TAFTA seems poised to do the exact opposite.\u201d<br \/>\n&#8211;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEuropean negotiators have targeted <b>\u2018Buy Local\u2019 public procurement<\/b> in 23 cities across the United States, threatening programs that shore up local economies and family farms,\u201d said Kathy Ozer from the National Family Farm Coalition.\u00a0 \u201cCorporations on both sides of the Atlantic are also targeting<b> food safety <\/b>and consumer measures affecting everything from GMO labeling, to milk standards, to policies under the recent Food Safety Modernization Act.\u00a0\u00a0 Knocking down progress on food safety and GMOs through TTIP further threatens food sovereignty here in the US and across the globe.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More broadly, all groups argued that TAFTA should not include \u201cinvestor-state dispute settlement\u201d provisions that would grant over 24,000 European-owned subsidiaries operating in the U.S. the power to attack virtually any U.S. law, regulation or court decision that they view as a \u201cbarrier to trade.\u201d\u00a0 They likewise warned that proposals for a \u201cregulatory convergence\u201d chapter could be used to delay and prevent new safeguards in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more we learn about this agreement the more we understand why the US and the EU are holding its contents so close to the vest. \u00a0It has the potential, for example, to give corporations unbridled power to sue our governments over public interest policies in private trade tribunals, and to push more trade in fossil fuels while limiting the ability of governments to create localized renewable energy systems,\u201d said Ilana Solomon, director of the Sierra Club\u2019s Responsible Trade Program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a new model of trade that puts communities, workers and the environment before the profits of multinational corporations.\u201d \u201cCorporations want TAFTA to provide them with special powers to attack safeguards that are already in place and new ones before they\u2019re even written,\u201d said Arthur Stamoulis, executive director of Citizens Trade Campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouple that with the fact the U.S. negotiators have granted hundreds of corporate lobbyists access to TAFTA texts, while barring the public from reviewing them, and there\u2019s no question that this could end up a very bad deal for America\u2019s working families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to speakers discussing a cross-section of the safeguards threatened by TAFTA, the event\u00a0also featured street theater with activists dressed as a \u201cMad Cow\u201d and \u201cChlorinated Chicken\u201d to highlight TAFTA\u2019s threats to food safety.<\/p>\n<p>Groups that participated included the Center for Digital Democracy, Center for Food Safety, Citizens Trade Campaign, Coalition for Sensible Safeguards,\u00a0Food &amp;
