{"id":5171,"date":"2015-03-20T09:57:14","date_gmt":"2015-03-20T13:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/?p=5171"},"modified":"2015-03-20T09:58:47","modified_gmt":"2015-03-20T13:58:47","slug":"florida-isnt-buying-citigroup-execs-tpp-promises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/blog\/2015\/03\/20\/florida-isnt-buying-citigroup-execs-tpp-promises\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida Isn&#8217;t Buying Citigroup Exec&#8217;s TPP Promises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When\u00a0U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew visited\u00a0Miami in March 2015 trying\u00a0to build support for the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), Citizens Trade Campaign and its partners were\u00a0there\u00a0warning that the deal poses serious risks to jobs and wages for Florida\u2019s working families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trans-Pacific Partnership isn\u2019t going to create jobs in Miami. It\u2019s going to offshore jobs and drive down wages,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Luis Meurice, Business Manager for the International Longshoremen\u2019s Association (ILA) Local 192<\/strong><strong>2<\/strong>. \u201cWe\u2019re not buying that this will do anything other than hurt Florida\u2019s working families. We\u2019ve heard the same line about these trade deals again and again.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The TPP is modeled after President Obama\u2019s largest trade to date \u2013 the Korean-U.S. Free Trade Agreement \u2013 which was also promised to increase U.S. exports and support job creation, but instead had\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/citizen.typepad.com\/eyesontrade\/2015\/03\/unhappy-third-birthday-for-korea-fta-drags-down-obama-push-for-fast-track.html\">the opposite result<\/a>. After the Korean Free Trade Agreement\u2019s first three years, the U.S. trade deficit in goods with South Korea has ballooned by 84 percent, equating to a loss of nearly 85,000 American jobs, according to the trade-jobs ratio the administration used to project job gains when it was first promoting the deal. Not only is the deficit up, but exports of U.S. goods to Korea have actually fallen by $2.2 billion (an estimated 5 percent).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a visit to\u00a0the Port of Miami and a speech\u00a0on trade policy at the University of Miami, Lew also spoke\u00a0at an event hosted by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce at\u00a0Miami Dade College\u00a0that was greeted by protesters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSending former Wall Street executives around the country to convince people that secretive trade deals are being written to help regular people instead of corporate elites might not be the best strategy,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0<strong>Don Abicht, President of Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 3122<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cYou\u2019d think the White House would have someone else in its stable to promote these things, but they don\u2019t. Opposition to them is nearly universal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the Obama administration, Lew was an executive of Citigroup, where, among other things, he oversaw the firms more than 100 offshore subsidiaries in the Cayman Islands. The President\u2019s top trade advisor, U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, is also a former Citigroup executive. Also traveling the country to promote the TPP is U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, the billionaire founder of PSP Capital Partners.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the TPP also point out that, while the public has been barred from reviewing TPP proposals, the Obama administration has granted hundreds of corporate lobbyists special \u201ccleared advisor\u201d status allowing them to review and comment on TPP texts.
