{"id":5278,"date":"2015-10-21T11:12:20","date_gmt":"2015-10-21T15:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/?p=5278"},"modified":"2016-01-07T14:13:57","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T19:13:57","slug":"community-leaders-decry-secrecy-at-miami-trade-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/blog\/2015\/10\/21\/community-leaders-decry-secrecy-at-miami-trade-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Leaders Slam Secrecy at Miami Trade Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TTIPMiami1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5276\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TTIPMiami1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"TTIPMiami1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TTIPMiami1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TTIPMiami1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A block away from a major trade negotiating summit taking place in downtown Miami, elected officials and community leaders held a press event on October 21, 2015 to demand greater transparency in the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and other secretive trade pacts that affect south Florida\u2019s economy, environment and public health.\u00a0 The press event comes just over a week since City of Miami Commissioners unanimously passed as resolution opposing secrecy in trade deals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remain opposed to the recently-completed TPP agreement and the TTIP \u2014 agreements conducted in secret with little or not input from those it will affect most,\u201d said <b>Florida Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-20)<\/b> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/HastingsLettertoTTPandTTIPProtestors.pdf\">letter read at the event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have continually called for any trade deal to meet strict labor and environmental standards, and have a consistent record of standing up for fair trade. Once the TTIP agreement is released, if it falls short of these standards, I will oppose it as I have with TPA and TTP deals that did not meet this threshold,\u201d said <b>Florida Congressman Patrick Murphy (CD-18) <\/b>in a written statement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Maimi2b.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Maimi2b-227x300.png\" alt=\"Maimi2b\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Maimi2b-227x300.png 227w, https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Maimi2b-775x1024.png 775w, https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Maimi2b.png 952w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><\/a>Speakers at the event included former <b>Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natacha Seijas<\/b>; <b>Bishop James Adams of the St. Johns Institutional Baptist Church<\/b>; <b>Father Frank Corbishley of the St. Bede Episcopal Church and South Florida Interfaith Worker Justice<\/b>; and\u00a0representatives of Friends of the Earth US and the Communications Workers of America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMassive trade agreements that will have a real effect on jobs, wages, the environment and public health in our communities should not be negotiated in the shadows,\u201d said <b>Fred Frost of the Communication Workers of America. <\/b>\u201cThe American people deserve to know what U.S. negotiators have been proposing in our names, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re here to demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want TTIP negotiators to release all texts now because we\u2019re worried what they\u2019re negotiating will undermine the regulation of toxic chemicals, which would threaten our public health and could lead to increased rates of cancer and other chronic illnesses,\u201d said<b> Jenny Bock of Friends of the Earth US.<\/b> \u00a0\u201cWe cannot afford for life-altering policy decisions to be made behind closed doors, with industry lobbyists granted privileged access to negotiating documents while environmental advocates and the public are shut out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unlike European negotiators, who have made their TTIP proposals public, U.S. negotiators have flatly refused to make their proposals for both the TTIP, as well as the just\u2013completed, but still secret Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) available for public scrutiny. They have likewise blocked composite texts from being published. Meanwhile, they have granted hundreds of corporate lobbyist\u2019s special \u201ccleared advisor\u201d status that provides them with access to negotiating texts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Miami5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Miami5-300x219.png\" alt=\"Miami5\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Miami5-300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Miami5-1024x748.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe know that the Europeans have made proposals that would threaten segments of Miami\u2019s workforce with procurement provisions that force us to waive \u2018Buy American\u2019 and \u2018Buy Local\u2019 requirements,\u201d said <b>Deborah Dion, Florida director of Citizens Trade Campaign.<\/b> \u201cEuropeans have also proposed establishing an \u2018Investment Court System\u2019 that could subject Miami and Florida laws and regulations on the environment, food safety and more to attack in international bodies that circumvent our own judicial system. These are matters the public should be able to investigate and have a say over before the ink on the deal is dry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/blog\/2015\/10\/08\/miami-speaks-out-against-trade-secrecy\/\">Miami resolution passed unanimously<\/a> on October 8<sup>th<\/sup> calls on President Obama and Congress to \u201cprovide transparent, public participation and collaboration\u201d on both TTIP and the TPP.\u00a0 Similar resolutions have also been passed in the City of South Miami, City of Hialeah Gardens, and the City of Hallandale Beach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not support the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement.
