{"id":5294,"date":"2015-11-12T11:40:28","date_gmt":"2015-11-12T16:40:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/?p=5294"},"modified":"2016-01-07T13:02:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T18:02:38","slug":"five-ways-the-tpp-is-worse-than-past-trade-agreements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/blog\/2015\/11\/12\/five-ways-the-tpp-is-worse-than-past-trade-agreements\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Ways the TPP Is Worse than Past Trade Agreements"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>As might be expected from a back-room deal negotiated with the aid of hundreds of corporate advisors, while the public and press were shut out, the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) not only continues the awful legacy of past trade agreements that put corporate profits ahead of jobs and wages, the environment and public health \u2014 in a number of important ways, the TPP is actually far worse than past agreements. \u00a0Here are five key examples.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0.<\/div>\n<div>1.)\u00a0<b><i>Worse-than-NAFTA \u201cRules of Origin\u201d That Threaten U.S. Jobs:\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/b>The TPP is so poorly negotiated that it allows products assembled from parts made primarily in third-party countries to enter into the United States duty-free \u2014 a major rollback from even the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). \u00a0In this manner, goods made in China and other countries with no TPP obligations what-so-ever, be it on weak labor standards or reciprocal market access, have a back-door mechanism to enter the United States, undercutting U.S. employers. \u00a0This provision affects everything from food products to automobiles to solar panels, with even the\u00a0<i>Wall Street Journal<\/i>\u00a0suggesting that the TPP is likely to destroy hundreds of thousands of American\u00a0manufacturing jobs.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0.<\/div>\n<div>2.)\u00a0<b><i>A Roll Back of\u00a0Bush-Era Environmental Obligations:<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 The TPP\u2019s environment chapter rolls back countries\u2019 obligations to \u201cadopt, maintain and implement\u201d important multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) in comparison to those included in all previous U.S. trade agreements since the George W. Bush administration. \u00a0Bush-era trade deals included seven key MEAs. \u00a0The TPP includes only one, allowing countries to violate their environmental obligations in order to boost trade and investment without consequences.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\u00a0 .<\/div>\n<div>3.)<b><i>\u00a0New Tools for Banks to Challenge Financial Reforms:<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 For the first time in a U.S. trade agreement, the TPP includes a \u201cminimum standard of treatment\u201d obligation in its financial services chapter, enabling banks, insurance companies, hedge funds and others to use the pact\u2019s controversial investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) system to attack financial regulations as violating their \u201cexpectations\u201d of how they should be treated under the agreement. \u00a0Meanwhile, the supposed \u201csafeguard\u201d that U.S. negotiators claim would protect such policies replicates terms that have failed to protect challenged policies in the past.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 .<\/div>\n<div>4.)\u00a0<b><i>The \u201cEvergreening\u201d of Medicine Patents that Block Access to Medicine:<\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Once again rolling back progress made during the George W. Bush administration, the TPP requires countries to allow additional 20-year patents for \u201cnew uses\u201d of medicines that are already under patent \u2014 a process that \u201cevergreens\u201d pharmaceutical companies\u2019 medicine patents well beyond the original two decades, while blocking competition from lower-cost, life-saving generics. \u00a0Unlike past deals that recognized the need for flexibility in poorer nations, the TPP\u2019s extreme medicine patent rules apply to developing countries.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 .<\/div>\n<div>5.)\u00a0<b><i>A \u201cDocking\u201d Procedure to Make the Massive Pact Even Bigger: \u00a0<\/i><\/b>Among its current twelve countries, the TPP would already establish rules governing approximately 40% of the global economy, making it the biggest free trade agreement (FTA) in history. \u00a0Unlike past U.S. FTAs, however, the TPP also includes a \u201cdocking\u201d mechanism that would allow any other countries to join over time. \u00a0A wide number, from the Philippines to China, have expressed some interest in doing so.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>The TPP threatens to offshore U.S. jobs and drive down wages, harm the environment, undermine financial reforms, increase healthcare costs and more. \u00a0Enough is enough. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/org.salsalabs.com\/o\/1034\/p\/dia\/action3\/common\/public\/?action_KEY=18673\"><b>Click here to urge Congress to vote against the TPP.<\/b><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As might be expected from a back-room deal negotiated with the aid of hundreds of corporate advisors, while the public and press were shut out, the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":5213,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[83],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v18.4.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Five Ways the TPP Is Worse than Past Trade Agreements - Citizens Trade Campaign<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is actually far worse than past agreements.
