Gerard, International President, United Steelworkers:<\/a> <\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe effort to achieve the goal of a fair trade agreement that protects workers in the United States, Canada and Mexico is far from over.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/teamster.org\/news\/2018\/10\/hoffa-teamsters-not-ready-support-or-oppose-new-nafta-replacement\">Jim Hoffa, General President, Teamsters:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe new Labor Chapter and the annex with Mexico contain obligations and protections that are superior to the original NAFTA\u2026 However, until we are satisfied that those obligations will be subject to swift and sure enforcement, we cannot endorse this renegotiation.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goiam.org\/news\/machinists-union-statement-on-nafta-renegotiations\/\">Robert Martinez, Jr., International President, Machinists Union:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWhile current language includes some welcome improvements, it also retains some of the most serious flaws of the proposed TPP, including provisions that limit the types of labor violations that would be covered by the agreement. We will be reviewing language concerning standards and enforcement once they are finalized.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cwa-union.org\/news\/call-center-workers-left-behind-in-new-nafta-deal\">Communications Workers of America:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cUnfortunately, nothing is included in the deal to advance the provisions of CWA\u2019s call center bill, despite CWA President Chris Shelton asking the Administration multiple times to take action to stop the outsourcing and offshoring of call center jobs. \u00a0While the new agreement contains improvements in certain areas, significant changes are still needed to make this a good deal that benefits workers and stops the race to the bottom.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aflcio.org\/2018\/10\/1\/nafta-deal-should-create-jobs-protect-our-environment-and-safeguard-democracy\">Celeste Drake, Trade Policy Specialist, AFL-CIO:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe many unanswered questions include whether, when and how Mexico will enact and implement labor law reform; whether, when and how labor monitoring and enforcement tools will be included in the agreement and any associated legislation; what the final auto rule of origin looks like; and whether Buy American will be strengthened or weakened.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div><em>Environmental Groups<\/em><\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/press-releases\/2018\/10\/trump-s-climate-denying-nafta-proposal-would-perpetuate-outsourcing-pollution\">Michael Brune, Executive Director, Sierra Club:<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong> \u201cTrump\u2019s version of NAFTA would encourage further outsourcing of pollution and jobs, offer special handouts to corporate polluters like Chevron and ExxonMobil, and cement Trump\u2019s polluting legacy for years after he has left office. The proposal not only fails to mention climate change \u2013 it would prolong NAFTA\u2019s contribution to the climate crisis.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/foe.org\/news\/trumps-nafta-deal-great-big-oil-bad-global-climate-local-communities\/\">Doug Norlen, Director of Economic Policy, Friends of the Earth U.S.:<\/a> <\/strong>\u00a0\u201cTrump\u2019s trade agreement with Mexico and Canada is a corporate giveaway intended to sharply limit the powers of government to protect people and the planet.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div><em>Consumer Organizations<\/em><\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/sites\/default\/files\/statement-nafta-text-release-sept-30-2018.pdf\">Lori Wallach, Director, Public Citizen\u2019s Global Trade Watch:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe new deal includes some important improvements for which we have long advocated, some new terms we oppose and more work required to stop NAFTA\u2019s ongoing job outsourcing, downward pressure on our wages and environmental damage.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodandwaterwatch.org\/news\/nafta-reboot-threatens-food-safety-promotes-fracking-and-gmos\">Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food &amp; Water Watch:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe text reveals provisions that undermine U.S. food safety protections, including aggressive \u2018sound science\u2019 language designed to make it harder to defend or implement food safety safeguards\u2026.\u00a0The deal even creates new ways for Canada and Mexico to second-guess U.S. border inspectors that halt suspicious food shipments, which would have a dangerously chilling effect on food safety enforcement.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/potentially-lethal-new-nafta-ip-chapter-requires-10-year-biologics-monopolies-worst-such-rule-us-fta\">Public Citizen\u2019s Access to Medicines Division:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe rules go significantly beyond the original NAFTA text in their government-sponsored patent and exclusivity protections for corporate monopoly control over needed medicines. \u00a0Their purpose is to better insulate expensive new medicines from generic competition; helping pharmaceutical corporations keep the prices of at least some new medicines higher for longer.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div><em>Farm &amp; Food Advocates<\/em><\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nffc.net\/index.php\/family-farmers-new-trade-deal-is-more-of-the-same\/\">Jim Goodman, President, National Family Farm Coalition:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cPresident Trump touts USMCA as a big win for US farmers, but it is a huge loss for dairy farmers on both sides of the border.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iatp.org\/documents\/new-nafta-falls-flat-farmers-food-advocates\">Juliette Majot, Executive Director, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe reworked NAFTA agreement entrenches agribusiness control over supply chains, seeks to streamline approval and trade of controversial agricultural biotechnology products, fails to protect consumers\u2019 right to know what\u2019s in their food and where it is produced, and worsens the devastating impacts of climate change.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mikecallicrate.com\/ufcw-statement-on-usmca-trade-agreement\/\">Marc Perrone, President, United Food and Commercial Workers:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cA trade agreement without COOL is terrible for sustainable jobs and food safety. \u00a0Every hard-working family deserves to know where their food comes from. \u00a0Keeping this information hidden endangers our health and destroys middle class meat processing jobs across our country.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>.<\/div>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.r-calfusa.com\/trump-administration-misses-huge-opportunity-strengthen-americas-cattle-industry-new-u-s-mexico-canada-trade-agreement\/\">Bill Bullard, CEO, R-CALF USA:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWe are deeply disappointed that the Trump Administration, like previous Administrations, has folded under the pressure of the multinational meatpackers and their allies who successfully sought to make no changes to NAFTA that would help the largest segment of American agriculture \u2013 the U.S. cattle industry \u2013 overcome the abusive market power of foreign and domestic multinational meatpackers who will continue to leverage-down the price and value of U.S. cattle under the new agreement.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These are initial reactions when the NAFTA 2.0 text was released on September 30, 2018\u2026 Organized Labor Leo W.
